How to Recognize Signs of Alcohol Poisoning

When consumed in excess, any form of alcohol can become dangerous and deadly. Fortunately, there are some tell-tale signs or symptoms of alcohol poisoning. Learning to identify these symptoms could save the life of a friend or loved one. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask the person if he feels nauseous. Watch for repeated vomiting.

  2. Step 2

Examine and feel the skin. Alcohol poisoning may result in cool skin that appears pale or bluish in color. Be aware that cool skin may indicate that the person is hypothermic.

  3. Step 3

Listen to the person's breathing. Notice if the breathing appears lethargic and slow. Slow breathing is typically defined as less than eight breaths a minute. The breathing may also be erratic.

  4. Step 4

Talk to the person to determine their mental awareness. Alcohol poisoning often results in confusion and the appearance of being in a fog. In extreme cases, the person may be unconscious.

  5. Step 5

Recognize that the person could develop seizures resulting from dehydration or hypoglycemia.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to keep the person sitting until help arrives.
  • Don't wait to call 911. If you notice even some of the symptoms, call 911 immediately.
  • Don't attempt to rouse the person by placing them in a cold shower. This may lead to hypothermia and unconsciousness.
  • Don't leave a person suspected of having alcohol poisoning alone. He could choke on his vomit.
