If your four-year-old is in preschool or another activity that allows him to meet other children, chances are that he would love to have a birthday party so he can celebrate with his friends. Throwing a party for a four-year-old can be a lot of fun. Kids at this age are usually obsessed with themes such as dinosaurs, Barbie and sports. The harder you work to decorate your home to accommodate these themes, the more awesome your four-year-old's birthday party will be.
Create invitations that also act as a "ticket" for the birthday theme. Among your theme options are safari, Hollywood, baseball or a castle, all of which are favourites among four-year-olds. Your invitation could say something like, "One ticket to a party adventure of a lifetime."
Decorate your home to convey your party theme. For a castle party, you may want to hire someone or ask a friend to pose as a prince, princess, king or queen. Decorate the walls with large pieces of cardboard with felted designs of bricks to resemble castle walls.
Serve finger food to the kids. Young children don't usually have a big appetite when there is a lot of fun activity going on around them. Small sections of pizza, chicken fingers, baby carrots and of course cake decorated in your party's theme are all appropriate.
Play Follow the Leader as the kids look around at the decorations. Hire a clown or magician to entertain the kids along their journey. Four-year-olds also love balloons, so you could hire a balloon artist to create balloon animals or other balloon creations such as flowers or shapes.
Let the kids play outside in a bouncy castle. Four-year-olds are an age group with a high energy level. They will need to get some of this energy out and a bouncy castle is the perfect activity for this.
Play music during the party activities. Kids of all ages love music, especially four-year-olds. A number of CDs are available that contain popular children's songs. You can also incorporate games with the music, such as Musical Chairs or dancing the Hokey Pokey.
Serve a variety of beverages at the party, but try and avoid serving too many sugary drinks such as punch and soda. Opt for fruit juice, homemade lemonade or even water.
Be sure to offer drinks to all the children after they have played outside in the bouncy castle to ensure they are well hydrated.
