Become a Talent Agent

Becoming a talent agent may sound like an "over the rainbow" career--too good to be true. But there are very real possibilities in this field, and not just in Hollywood. Talent agents are found in small towns, too, busily looking for the next big star.

  1. 1

Plan your education carefully. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Communication will prepare you for public relations. You must be an expert negotiator and skilled in media representation.

  2. 2

Study business administration whether you opt for the college degree or not. You must be able to run an office, be organized and efficient with bookkeeping and know basic accounting.

  3. 3

Practice people skills and know how to handle all personality types. As a talent agent, you work to match talented people with the clients who need their particular kind of talent. You must be a person of character and integrity. Guard your reputation and honor your word in all situations.

  4. 4

Start simple, once you have your education and your honest reputation. All it really takes to begin is a computer and a phone. You can work from home and work at your own pace to become established as a talent agent.

  5. 5

Network with your local Chamber of Commerce, dance and music schools and photographers. Advertise that you are a talent agent, looking for clients to represent. Put your notice out at schools and churches. There are talented people everywhere. Models, comedians, musicians, singers, jugglers, hypnotists and illusionists all want bookings.

Tips and warnings

  • Advertise in the newspaper that you book talent for weddings, receptions, parties of all kinds and trade shows. This will attract talented people looking for work and those needing talented people.
