Hair gel is used to create many different hairstyles, ranging from slick and polished to spiked and funky. Hair gel is available in different strengths to create different types of styles and to style different textures of hair. No matter your preference, you can use hair gel to create a look that suits your personal style.

Short hair can be spiked with hair gel to create a stylised, funky appeal. To spike short hair with hair gel, you'll want to use a medium-hold gel. However, if you have wavy or curly hair, a firm-hold hair gel will work better. Put a dollop of hair gel in one palm and rub your hands together to disperse it evenly over each hand. Flip your head upside down and rub your hands through your hair, brushing the gel against the natural growth pattern. After the gel has dried, flip your head back upright and lightly run a comb through the hair if you'd like to soften the spikes slightly.

Slicked Back

Hair gel can be used to slick back any length of hair, whether it's short or long and tied back in a ponytail. A firm-hold hair gel works best to create a slicked back style on most hair. If you have particularly curly hair, extra firm hold will work better than simple firm hold. To slick hair back with hair gel, put a dollop of gel on one palm and rub your hands together to disperse it evenly. Smooth your hair back with the gel until it begins to dry. As it begins to dry, brush it back in the direction in which you want it slicked with a soft, bristled brush until it dries. This completes the look.

A voluminous look can be created with use of hair gel in hair ranging from medium to long in length. A medium-hold hair gel works best for creating a volumized style. Put a dollop of hair gel on one palm and rub it over both hands. Flip the hand upside down and work the hair gel into the roots until dry. Once dry, flip your head back upright and smooth with a hairbrush to complete the style.
