If the idea of sharing content between an iOS or Android device with your PlayStation 3 wirelessly sounds appealing, iMediaShare will be right up your street. The app allows you to access pictures, film clips and other content on your phone or tablet through your games console over a Wi-Fi network, offering you the opportunity to view your personal files on a larger screen and stream online videos via your mobile device.

  1. 1

Navigate to your device's app store and search for and download iMediaShare. You can grab a stripped-down version of the software for free, or pay for the full HD app.

  2. 2

Go to "Settings" from your PS3's Home screen, select "Network Settings" and hit the "X" button on your XrossMediaBar if your console isn't connected to your home Wi-Fi network or is currently hooked up via a wired connection. iMediaShare will only work over wireless. If your console is connected via an Ethernet cable, disconnect it before proceeding. Choose "Internet Connection," select "Enabled," scroll down to "Internet Connection Settings" and press "X." Disconnect from the Internet if prompted to and select "Easy." Hit "Wireless" on the next screen and follow the instructions to connect your PS3 to your wireless network.

  3. 3

Head back to your PS3's "Network Settings" submenu and make sure your "Media Server" is connected. If it isn't, your console won't be able to communicate with iMediaShare over your wireless connection.

  4. 4

Open iMediaShare on your mobile device and follow the onscreen instructions to connect to your Wi-Fi network if your phone or slate isn't already hooked up. Tap the "My Photos" icon in the top left-hand corner of iMediaShare, select an album and open a thumbnail. Then select your PS3 from the list of devices connected to your home network. An iMediaShare icon will appear in the "Photo" section of your PS3 menu. Select it to view the content you chose to share on your mobile device.

Tips and warnings

  • Navigate to the corresponding media type folder on your PS3 to access content from your mobile device. If you want to access film clips, head to the iMediaShare icon in the "Video" section of your PS3 menu after selecting content on your smartphone or tablet.
