For a lover of music, few things in life could be worse than losing an entire iTunes library that took years of hard graft to build up. If you've been unfortunate enough to find yourself in this unpleasant position, all will not be lost, provided you've kept your iPod Classic synced with iTunes. If you have, you'll be able hook your device up to your PC and put your media back where it should be once you've learned where Apple hides your tunes.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • USB cable

  1. 1

Connect your iPod to your computer with the USB cable it came with. When iTunes opens, shut it down. Whatever you do, don't sync your iPod to iTunes. Your whole library will be wiped from your iPod if you do so, which will hinder the rest of the process somewhat.

  2. 2

Open your PC's Control Panel from your Start screen and type "Folder" in the search box. Select "Folder Options," open the "View" tab in the Folder Options window and fill the "Show hidden folders, files and drives" checkbox before hitting "OK." The folder that stores your iPod's music library is hidden. Completing this process will allow you to access it via your computer.

  3. 3

Open a "Computer" Explorer window and click on the iPod icon in the "Portable Devices" section. Locate your "iPod_Control" folder and then drag your "Music" folder to a location on your hard drive. The contents of your iPod library will then copy to your PC. If you're possessed of a particularly large library, this could be a slow process.

  4. 4

Disconnect your iPod from your PC and open iTunes. Click "File" and then "Add Folder to Library." Navigate to the "Music" folder you copied, click "OK" and your music will be imported into iTunes, restoring your library to its former glory.

Tips and warnings

  • If you have an iPod Touch or any other iOS device, you won't be able to access your hidden music folder. You'll need to download software such as Easy iPod Transfer, TouchCopy or iGadget to restore a lost iTunes library from your player.
