You don’t need to enter any special mode on an Android smart phone to download applications from sites like Google Play. Downloads of applications are managed through the operating system. However, if you need to install a system update, or if you have to download a program as the root user, you will need to enter download mode and then exit from that once the update has been completed. Nexus and HTC phones use a “fastboot” mode for downloading and installing files to the operating system. Samsung phones use “download” mode.

Instructions

  1. 1

Power off the phone and leave it off for about 10 seconds. Speed up the power down process by removing the battery. Reinstall the battery if you took it out to power down. Press and hold down the Volume Down, Home and Power keys together. Keep these buttons pressed down until a message appears on the screen asking you to confirm the action. Press the Volume Up button to continue. Any install you perform should end with a reboot that gets you out of download mode automatically. However, sometimes the process does not complete correctly.

  2. 2

Enter recovery mode from download mode if your download process does not reboot automatically. Press the power button to turn the phone off and then press the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together. This presents a menu which includes the reboot option. Selecting “Reboot system now” will bring the phone back in its regular mode.

  3. 3

Power off the phone by holding down the Power button until the screen goes black. If you entered download mode by mistake and don’t need to install anything then just turn the phone off and on again to get out of download mode.

  4. 4

Remove the battery as a last resort if you find your phone is completely jammed and none of the key presses work. Leave the battery out for at least ten seconds before reinserting it and turning on the phone with the Power button.
