Files with the CBZ and CBR file extensions are comic book archives for use with a comic book reader. These are digitised comics that help preserve old editions against the risk of physical damage to the original paper copy. Both file types are compressed archive files. The difference between them is that a CBZ is compressed by WinZip and a CBR is compressed by WinRAR. You can download either of these programmes for free (see Resources).

Things you need
Create a directory on your computer with a rough abbreviation of the comic name. If you intend to create many comic archives create a general folder first and then create a folder for each individual comic.
Scan each page of your comic. The scanner will save the scanned image as either a .jpg or a .png. Reset the scanner’s numbering so that it starts at “File001” for the file name. Some scanners just put the number, “001,” “002,” and so on. That name format is fine, too.
Save all the files to the folder you created with the comic name. Once all pages have been scanned make sure the files are in name order. Enter the folder, press the right mouse button and hover over “Arrange Icons By” in the right-click menu. Select “Name” from the submenu.
Switch up to the containing general comic folder. Move the mouse pointer to the folder containing your comic. Press the right mouse button and hover over “Send To” in the right-click menu. Select “Compressed (zipped) Folder” from the submenu. If you have WinZip installed this will create a WinZip file with the same name as the original folder. If you have WinRAR installed as the default compression application the folder will be in the WinRAR format.
Click on “Tools” in the Windows Explorer menu bar. Select “Folder Options.” This opens a Folder Options window. Click on the “View” tab. Scroll through the Advanced Settings and uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types.” Press the “OK” button.
Look for the compressed file you created. You will now see its extension. Click once on the file name. Click on it again to enter editor mode (do not double-click). If the file extension in .zip change it to .cbz. If it is .rar change it to .cbr.
