Sometimes a Sony PlayStation 3 will need some maintenance or cleaning of its internal components, such as the laser. This may necessitate the removal of the PS3's warranty sticker so you can open up the console. The problem is that the removal of this sticker voids the warranty of the PS3, with the sticker saying "Void" on removal. Even if you avoid this, it is important to avoid damaging the sticker so that people cannot tell that it has been removed.

Instructions

  1. 1

Memorise the exact position that the sticker lies in on your PS3. They do not all come with stickers in the same position, they can be affixed at different angles. You must remember this because it will allow you to place this sticker back on your PS3 in its original location, minimising the risk that someone will be able to see it has been removed.

  2. 2

Plug in a hairdryer. Set it to about 50C, or the equivalent setting on your hairdryer. Leave it to warm up for a short while. Aim the hairdryer over one corner of the sticker, holding it a few inches away from the sticker. Too close and it will damage the case of the PS3 and the sticker itself. Hover it over the corner for approximately 50 seconds, which should be sufficient to eliminate the adhesive.

  3. 3

Remove the sticker from the PS3. This is the trickiest part. Tools can be helpful. The blade of a craft knife is handy because it gets underneath the sticker very easily, and can take it off very smoothly. However these can be risky as they can cut the sticker, or scratch the PS3's surface. Using a blunter implement such as your fingers or a hairstyling device removes the scratching and ripping risk, but does not get under the sticker as easily and can therefore damage the edges.

  4. 4

Remove the PS3's casing and perform whatever maintenance is needed. Once the casing is back in place apply some clear adhesive to the back of the sticker and put it back down in its original spot, placing down one end first then rolling your finger down the sticker to press it down.

Tips and warnings

  • Give the sticker sometime to settle after reapplying it before using the console again.
  • Do not rush this process. This increases the risk of damage. Any rips will void the warranty.
