“Game Center” is an application that is integrated into the iOS operating system since iOS 4.2. Thus any device running iOS, including iPhones, iPods and iPads, automatically includes this app. The purpose of the app is to enable you to play games over a network against other iOS device owners. However, you may never use this app and want to get rid of it. Normally, you can delete apps from your device by clicking on a red “X” in the top right hand corner of the icon. However, Game Center does not include this feature and so you have to delete it via a different route.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Access Cydia from your device. Type “iFile” (without the quotes) into the search box in the Cydia main page. Click on iFile from the search results. Press the “Install” button and the press the “Confirm” button to install the app. The installation process will happen automatically.

  2. 2

Click “Return to Cydia” once the installation completes. Press the “Home” button to return to your springboard where you will see that the iFile icon has been added.

  3. 3

Tap on the iFile icon. When iFile opens it will show the contents of the current directory which will have the title “Springboard” at the top of the screen. To the left of that title is a button with the name of the directory above the current directory. Keep pressing that button until the title of the present directory shows “/” and the left button disappears. This is the root directory.

  4. 4

Tap on the “system” directory in the list of root directory contents. In the system directory listing tap on “applications.” This will show all of the applications installed on your device as the files that support the icons on your springboard. These all end in “.app.”

  5. 5

Tap the “Edit” button which is to the right of the title of the Applications directory. You will see the names of the applications in the directory squeeze over to the right to create space for a new column to the left of the screen. Scroll down through the application files until you find “Games” and tap on it to put a tick in the new left column. If you are deleting it from a iPad it will be called “Games”

  6. 6

Tap on the rubbish bin icon on the bottom bar of the screen. This is the third icon on the menu. A pop-up message will ask you to confirm the delete. Press the red button to confirm.

  7. 7

Turn off the device and turn it on again. You will see that the Game Center app icon no longer appears on your springboard screen.
