The "artboards" feature in Adobe Illustrator CS5 allows you to create, colour, edit and design all the components of your artwork on the same screen, eliminating the need to switch from one page to another. These multiple artboards can be moved quickly by dragging them to the required position or rearranged by grid reference.

Instructions

Move the artboard with, or without, its contents

  1. 1

Click on the "Artboard tool" icon in the control panel or press "Shift" and the letter "O" for the keyboard shortcut.

  2. 2

Select the artboard and its contents that you want to move, navigate to the control panel and click the "Move/Copy Artwork With Artboard" option. To move the artboard without its contents you must deselect this option.

  3. 3

Place the cursor in the artboard and drag it to the required position. Alternatively, you can input new X and Y values in the control panel.

    Rearrange artboards

  1. 1

Choose the Artboards panel menu, which is a flyout menu, and select the "Rearrange Artboards" option.

  2. 2

Choose one of the five layouts you wish to use to rearrange your multiple artboards. The two most basic layouts allow you to arrange all the artboards in a single row or column, while a third lets you arrange the artboards from right-to-left, rather than the default setting of left-to-right.

  3. 3

Choose the "Grid by Row" or "Grid by Column" layouts if you prefer to place your multiple artboards in a specified number of rows or columns. Enter the number of rows and columns you wish to use in the relevant boxes.

  4. 4

Input the size of the horizontal and vertical spacing you require between the artboards.

  5. 5

Click the "Move Artwork with Artboard" option to move the artwork whenever the location of the artboards changes.

Tips and warnings

  • When rearranging artboards, an artboard within an artboard is regarded as a crop area and so moves with the containing artboard.
  • Changing the right-to-left layout format from the default setting will be automatically applied to the "Grid by Row" and "Grid by Column" layouts.
