How to connect an iPad as a second screen

You may want to use your iPad as a second screen to display different content to your desktop computer or laptop, for example you could use your main display for word processing and research and your iPad for email and social networking sites. Alternatively, your iPad can be used as a mirror of your main computer. In both cases, it is a relatively simple process to connect your iPad as a second screen using either Air Display (which is two separate applications: one in Windows or OS X, and another in iOS) or Virtual Computer Networking.

Instructions

    Air Display

    Go to the Avatron website on your desktop or laptop computer and under Air Display click on "View app."

    Click on "Start Using Air Display."

    Download and install Air Display Connect for Mac or Air Display Connect for Windows, depending on whether your main computer is a Mac or a Windows PC. Follow the simple instructions to install Air Display on your computer.

    Visit the App Store on your iPad and search for the Air Display app.

    Purchase the app and install it on your iPad.

    Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.

    Follow the on-screen instructions to make sure the two devices recognise each other through Air Display.

    Virtual Network Computing (VNC)

    Launch System Preferences on your Mac and under Internet and Wireless click on the "Sharing" icon. Beside Screen Sharing select the tick box to turn Screen Sharing on. Go back to System Preferences and under Internet and Wireless click on the "Network" icon. Make a note of the IP address. If you are using Windows, you will need to download a programme such as TightVNC, which is free.

    Visit the TightVNC website on your Windows computer and follow the simple download and installation instructions.

    Install a VNC app on your iPad. Free apps include Mocha VNC Lite, while paid-for apps like iTeleport and Mocha VNC have better features.

    Type your IP address into the app settings.
