A boonie hat is a lightweight, wide-brimmed cotton hat first worn by US soldiers during the Vietnam War. Still worn by soldiers to this day, it can be quite useful to protect your head and neck from the sun when hiking or exploring. The boonie hat's adjustable chin strap allows for several different ways to wear it, including using the strap to pull the brim of the hat up on either side of your head.

Instructions

  1. 1

Place the boonie hat on your head.

  2. 2

Take the chin strap in one hand and bring it up above your head until the string is bending the brim of the hat upwards. Hold the hat firmly on your head using your other hand, if necessary.

  3. 3

Tighten the chin strap with the adjustment slide to hold the hat brim in place.

Tips and warnings

  • If the chin strap is tightened right above your head, the hat will remain symmetrical; you can also tighten the chin strap behind your head, causing the brim of the hat to be wider on the front than on the back.
