Tracking Choices at USPS
The USPS offers four products that include tracking of your letter or package: Express Mail, Global Express Guaranteed, Express Mail International and Priority Mail International.
Tracking Basics
When you purchase any of the USPS tracking products, you will be given a tracking number. You can use this number to track progress on the website (link in Resource Section), the 24-hour automated phone system at 1-800-222-1811, or through live customer service from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. (EST) and 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekends and postal holidays.
What Does Tracking Show?
When you have tracking on a letter or package through the USPS, you will be able to follow the progress from the time you drop it off at the post office until the time it reaches its final destination. Using the barcode label attached to the package, each facility scans the package and an update is issued, including date, time and location of the item.
Additional USPS Tracking Services
Certain USPS locations offer Track & Confirm by Email. This allows you to receive status updates on your package, through one or a series of emails which inform you of the progress of the delivery. If you need written proof that your package has been delivered, you can get delivery confirmation by requesting the Signature Confirmation option, or by sending the item through registered or certified mail.
What Cannot Be Tracked?
First Class and Priority Mail cannot be tracked, due to the large volume that passes through the postal system each day. Additionally, packages sent from any country cannot be tracked within the United States.
