What is a Ventless Clothes Dryer?

A ventless clothes dryer has no output air vent. Traditional clothes dryers work by pulling in cool, dry air from the surrounding environment. The air is then heated and blown through the clothes before being discharged out through a vent. The discharged air is usually hot and full of moisture, so the vent is attached to an airtight flexible pipe that passes through the wall of the room to expel the air outside. There are multiple types of ventless dryers, the two most popular being condensation dryers and heat pump dryers. The distinct advantage to ventless dryers is that they can function anyplace in the home and do not require installing a vent pipe.

How Does a Ventless Clothes Dryer Work?

Like a normal dryer, the condensation dryer pulls in cool, dry air from the surrounding room. It is heated and passed through the clothes, but instead of being vented back out, it is passed through a heat exchanger. This heat exchanger is essentially a cooling device, which cools the air and causes the water in it to condense and flow into a drainpipe. Since the air is now dry again, it is reheated and passed through the clothes again. This process is repeated until the clothes are dry.

How Do the Results Compared to a Traditional Clothes Dryer?

The primary difference between the heat pump dryer and the condensation dryer is the nature in which the moisture is condensed from the used hot air within the machine. A condensation dryer uses a heat exchanger, which is a passive system as it relies on the humid air to come into contact with the pipes of the heat exchanger to cause condensation. A heat pump pulls the air through a series of pipes that are chilled by cold water on their exterior. As the air passes through these pipes, the water in the air condenses and drains away into an aperture at the bottom of the pipes. This leaves the air dry enough to be reheated and reused in the same fashion as the condensation dryer.
