Updated February 21, 2017

Originally, Rogaine was introduced in the 1980s as a treatment for high blood pressure. The side effect was hair growth. It was discovered that Rogaine revitalises hair follicles allowing the growing phase to last longer. The result is healthy hair. It was soon manufactured in a two per cent topical solution for hereditary hair growth, but only by prescription. Today, it is available over-the-counter in a five per cent topical solution and a two per cent solution. Its main ingredient is Minoxidil, the only FDA approved ingredient to regrow hair. There is Rogaine for men and for women. It comes in foam, regular strength and extra strength for men. For women, it comes in regular strength and scented.

Overview of Rogaine

How to use Rogaine

The application process for the liquid Rogaine is the same for men and women. Fill the dropper to the one ml mark and apply directly to the scalp. Wash your hands after applying the Rogaine. Let dry before using any other products such as hairspray or gel. Apply morning and night. The foam for men is a similar process. Instead of applying directly to the scalp, squirt a half of a capful into the hands and then massage into the scalp. Let dry before using other products. Apply morning and night.

Results of Rogaine

It takes approximately four months to see results with Rogaine. The hair will grow in fine, soft and colourless at first and then grow to be like your other hair. According to the Rogaine website, 85 per cent of men regrow hair in 16 weeks. A 48-week study on over 300 women showed 60 per cent hair growth in 32 weeks and new hair growth starting in four months. Six per cent of the women had mild skin irritation. If you use Rogaine daily as prescribed for a period of four months and no results occur, discontinue use.

Precautions

Never put Rogaine on skin that is irritated or sunburned. The medication can actually absorb into the body as well as cause more skin irritation. Only use Rogaine on the scalp and wash your hands after applying the medication. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing. Do not use any other hair growing medication while using Rogaine. Overdosing is not a problem, and if you miss a dose, just wait until the next application.
