Knowing the facts about your Rolex Submariner is the key to fully appreciating its value. Learning exactly what makes it tick will help you understand why it is James Bond's watch of choice, having first appeared in Dr. No (courtesy of producer Albert R. Broccoli) before starring in ten other Bond movies.

Underwater Use

The Submariner is designed for use while diving, and as such is waterproof to a depth of 300 meters (1,000 feet). It also has a unidirectional timing bezel, which allows for accurate measurement of diving time. The watch's glide-lock clasp means that it will comfortably fit over a wetsuit.

Self-Winding Function

The Submariner is a self-winding watch, which means that it is powered by the movement of the wearer and isn't dependent on a battery. Because of this, it is extremely reliable, even in extreme conditions. The winding mechanism itself consists of ten separate parts that ensure that the watch remains accurate.

The Submariner model is more than 50 years old, having first been produced in 1953. One of the reasons for its lasting appeal is its durability---the bezel is virtually scratchproof, and the oyster case is hermetically sealed to guard against damaging elements.

The Submariner is a straightforward watch to operate and maintain. To change the date, pull the winder (known as the crown) away from the dial so that it clicks once. To alter the time, pull it out another click. You can adjust the strap by half-link measurements without having the bracelet professionally shortened; simply release the glide clasp and tighten or loosen it to your preference.
