The E30 is the third-generation 3 Series made by German manufacturer BMW. The 325i was powered by a 2.5-litre straight-6 engine. Its performance can be enhanced by a performance computer chip.

The engine in the E30 325i is controlled by a computer board that has a number of computer chips. The performance chip replaces the chip that controls the fuel injection's maps with more aggressive settings for fuel and timing.

More Power

The better computer chips from a company such as Dinan Engineering add a noticeable amount of horsepower to the E30's engine, upping power from about 168hp to 183hp in the case of a Dinan chip. Most chips also raise the engine's rev limiter, allowing the engine to rev higher.

Installation and Cost

Installing a computer chip on an older BMW like the E30 is very straightforward. Whereas newer BMWs require a diagnostic computer to reprogram the software, the chip on the E30 is simply removed from the ECU board and replaced with the new one. The ECU board is located behind the dashboard and is unplugged and then removed for the installation of the new chip. The cost of a chip can range from £32 if bought used to a couple hundred dollars new.
