Linksys broadband Internet routers are manufactured by Cisco Systems, Inc. These routers have a web-based interface with which users can adjust the router settings. "Filter Multicast" is one of the settings that can be enabled or disabled.

Multicasting is the transmission of information over the Web to multiple recipients at the same time. It is a more efficient method of sending information than unicasting, in which each recipient receives a separate transmission of the information.

Filtering Multicast

Filtering multicast is when your router blocks incoming multicast traffic; that is, traffic that was not sent specifically to your computer via unicast. This can help protect your computer from multicast-based attacks and, if you're not using an application that makes use of multicast traffic, can lessen the load on the computer's resources.

The Linksys Interface

When you access the Linksys web-based interface, click on the "Edit MAC Filter Setting" to access the filter multicast option. If you want to block incoming multicast traffic, make sure Filter Multicast is set as "Enabled."
