If you need to transport bikes or bulky objects or if you want to save room in your car on road trips, roof racks are a good option. Two brands to choose from for roof racks are Thule and Yakima.

Roof racks typically consist of four towers that attach to your car and form the base for two crossbars onto which you can place different carriers depending on what you wish to transport. Crossbars for Thule are square, whereas Yakima crossbars are round. Thule and Yakima offer several types of carriers for bikes, cargo bins, skis and other sporting equipment. Some carriers are interchangeable between the two brands.

Car Considerations

Certain makes of cars fit better with Yakima and other cars fit better with Thule. When shopping for your roof rack it is best to consult with a reputable rack dealer to ensure you buy the brand that works best with your car. Your rack dealer will also advise you on how much weight your vehicle's roof can carry.

Thule is a Swedish-owned company, but many of its rack parts are made in its factory in the United States. Yakima is an American-owned company, but most of its parts are manufactured in Mexico.
