Crystal goblets and glassware are often family heirloom pieces passed down from generation to generation. Proper cleaning is important to the maintenance of crystal, and while crystal glasses can be placed in the dishwasher, hand-washing is less damaging and most often recommended.

Problems with Dishwashing

The main problem associated with dishwashing machines is that dishwashing detergents are harsh. Over time, abrasive detergents can mark and scar the crystal. Full-lead crystal is less dense than glass and scratches easily.

Dishwashing Tips

Choose a very mild dishwashing detergent or look for a product approved for crystal or cut glass use. Place the crystal in the top rack of the dishwasher and ensure that the glasses do not touch one another. Place the dishwasher on its delicate cycle, if possible. Allow the glasses to dry before removing them from the dishwasher, but crack the door at the end of the cycle to allow steam to escape.

Never place crystal decorated with gold or platinum accents into the dishwasher as the machine may damage these accents.

Drying and Storing

After washing crystal glasses, use a dry, soft cloth to remove any water spots. Wipe the glasses with a mixture of water and vinegar if hard water spots are difficult to remove. Store the glasses in an area not subject to drastic temperature changes. Do not store them upside down to avoid placing stress on the glasses' rims.
