Most people occasionally snore during sleep, but chronic snoring can severely disrupt the sleep of spouses and family members. A variety of devices to remedy snoring are available without a prescription, such as nasal inserts, mouth guards and even pillows.

The Causes of Snoring

When breathing passageways become narrowed during sleep, the tissue surrounding them vibrates and creates noise -- or snoring -- as air passes through. This narrowing can occur in the mouth, throat or nasal passages, and can be the result of a variety of physiological and health issues.

How a Pillow Can Help Stop Snoring

Pillows specially designed to prevent snoring aid the sleeper in maintaining a correct sleeping position by aligning the head with the spine, regardless of sleep position. Special pillows for snoring also keep the sleeper's chin up and jaw forward. Keeping the head, neck and jaw in the correct position during sleep can eliminate some of the physiological reasons for narrowed airways and ultimately, snoring.

Who Can Benefit

Sleep apnoea and other serious underlying health conditions can cause snoring. It's best to consult with a physician about severe snoring or snoring that is accompanied by additional symptoms to rule out illness before attempting to resolve the problem with anti-snoring devices. Those who snore only as a result of poor sleep positioning of the head and neck may experience positive results from using an anti-snore pillow.
