Weight of a mattress top

Updated April 17, 2017

Anytime you move from one home to another, you're reminded of the weight of a mattress. It can be quite heavy, and the weight actually increases over time. The weight of mattress tops varies between the different sizes.

Twin size

Twin mattresses are 99 cm (39 inches) wide and 190.5 cm (75 inches) long. A sample of twin mattresses listed for sale online included a range from 22.7 to 43.1 kg (50 to 95 pounds) and an average weight of 32.6 kg (71.8 pounds).

Queen size

Queen-sized mattresses are 152.4 cm (60 inches) wide and 203.2 cm (80 inches) long. A sample of queen mattresses listed for sale online included a range from 27.2 to 42.2 kg (60 to 93 pounds) and an average weight of 36.9 kg (81.4 pounds).

King size

King-size mattresses are 193 cm (76 inches) wide and 203.2 cm (80 inches) long. A sample of king mattresses listed for sale online ranged from 28.6 to 50.8 kg (63 to 112 pounds) and had an average weight of 41.8 kg (92.2 pounds).

Added weight

Over time, the weight of mattresses increases due to the accumulation of dead skin cells, dust mite debris, sweat and other factors. Estimates suggest the weight of a mattress may double over the course of 10 years.
