Carbon is commonly used in various odour elimination products. Whether it is by hunters hoping to block their scent from game or by folks hoping to erase an unpleasant odour from a home or car, carbon has a number of applications.

How a Carbon Odor Eliminator Works

Unlike traditional air fresheners, candles or perfumed sprays, carbon does not simply mask odours, it absorbs them. Most carbon-based odour eliminators use a form of charcoal, which is highly porous and therefore absorbent, to eliminate odours.

Commercial Odor Eliminators

Many carbon-based odour eliminator products are available commercially. These include specially designed charcoal refrigerator fresheners, carbon-based sprays and specially designed hunting gear and supplies. Many filters, such as those in air purifiers are also made with carbon to remove odours.

Make Your Own Odor Eliminator

The form of charcoal in commercial odour elimination products is active charcoal, also called active carbon. It is available in a variety of styles. An inexpensive source of activated charcoal is fish tank filters, available at most pet supply stores. You can use these filters or active charcoal granules to eliminate odours.

Odour Elimination Without Carbon

Active charcoal works best when removing odours from a confined area such as a car, a room or the inside of a refrigerator. If you are a hunter hoping to make your scent undetectable to game, commercial sprays are available that will accomplish this. You can also make your own spray by combining water, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and scentless hunting soap.
