Over 700 different types of plants, including the Sago palm tree, are poisonous to domestic pets, states Earth Clinic. This plant is found in many yards and is toxic to your dog.

The Sago palm tree is also known as the Japanese palm, King sago palm and the Sago cyas. This palm tree reaches heights of up to 7 to 10 feet, although it grows very slowly. Propagation of the Sago palm is by seed; it usually germinates in three to nine months.

While the entire plant is poisonous to dogs, the seeds of the Sago palm are most toxic. Dogs who ingest the seeds of the Sago palm will suffer serious adverse effects that often have long-term consequences.

Once a dog ingests the seeds of the Sago palm, serious symptoms occur. Dogs often suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting after ingestion. Other symptoms such as depression, liver failure and seizures can also occur.

If your dog has symptoms after ingesting Sago palm seeds or any part of the Sago palm, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible for an evaluation and treatment plan.
