The Best Time to Plant Grass Seed for a New Lawn

Developing a beautiful lawn starts when you plant grass seed. Also known as sowing, the best time to plant grass seed varies according to the region and type of grass seeded.

Time Frame

The Garden Counselor website, along with other agriculturists and lawn care centers, recommends autumn as the best planting time. However, homeowners may elect to plant successfully during the spring as well.

Significance

Autumn serves as the best time to plant grass seed because the threat of extreme temperatures no longer exists. During the autumn, grass seeds have time to take root before low temperatures interrupt the growing process.

Benefits

Autumn also provides the best start for new grass because grass diseases do not threaten the new growth at this time of year. Additionally, most lawn weeds stop growing in autumn, which allows more nutrients to reach the new grass growth and create a beautiful, full lawn.
