There are three methods of recovering your password or creating a new one in Windows XP: a password reset disk, an administrative account or the Recovery Console.

Password Reset Disk

A password reset disk is used along with the Password Reset Wizard to reset your password. To access it, type an incorrect password at the login screen and click "Reset" in the window that appears. This disk must be created beforehand, while you still have access and can log in.

Administrative Account

An administrator can reset any password on the system. If you can log in as the Administrator, or with another account that has administrative privileges then you can reset your password. Go to the Users icon in the Control Panel to implement this option, click on the user whose password you want to reset and click the option to change the password on the account.

Recovery Console

The Recovery Console can be used to repair your Windows installation, repair disk problems and has many other diagnostic and repair functions. One of them can be used to reset a user password. Recovery Console requires the administrator password for the system.
