Looking for a legitimate intelligence quotient (IQ) test on the Internet presents a minefield of websites offering tests. The challenge is finding a real IQ test that presents an accurate scoring of cognitive abilities.
Traditional IQ Testing
Traditional testing for IQ is performed in person by trained professionals. Tests such as the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales for children include parts that the children must manipulate while a professional assessor records results of the child's actions. Hoagies' Gifted Education Page, a website for parents of gifted children, lists the current primary tests for cognitive skills for adults and children, none of which offers an online testing option.
For Entertainment Only
IQ tests offered on the Internet are usually for entertainment purposes only. IQTest.com allows testing to begin without payment, but charges for the Complete Personal Intelligence Profile. The cost of the profile is not available on the main website, but is seen inside the account holder's profile. Mensa, the international organisation for individuals with high IQs, offers testing on its website, which it calls the Mensa Workout. This, too, is a "for entertainment purposes only" test, but may be preferred, since it is offered free of charge.
High IQ Organizations
The International High IQ Society offers membership to those with an IQ of 124 or higher. For individuals without previous IQ testing, a testing platform that is simply called "GiGi" is offered online. The society notes that, “GIGI is the premiere culture-free advanced progressive matrices IQ test.” As of September 2010, the cost is £2.50. A short version of Gigi is available at no charge. For the individual wanting the most reliable results for a personal perspective of cognitive abilities, the Gigi Pro Certified is the best online option at this time. IQ testing for professional and educational purposes is still currently managed on site by psychologists and academic testing facilities.
