Typical double garage size

Updated March 23, 2017

The typical size of a double garage is 5.4 m by 7.2 m (18 feet by 24 feet). A building this size is designed to store two vehicles with a small amount of storage. Garage design and size vary greatly, depending on the intended use.

Style and height

A basic garage is a one-story structure on a concrete slab with no basement. Ceilings are usually 2.4 m (8 feet) high with a roof pitch of 4.2 m (14 feet). The size and layout of the garage is sometimes determined by the plans of the home at construction. Garages can be detached from a home, too.

Standard door sizes

Double garage doors come standard in 4.8 and 5.4 m (16 foot and 18 foot) sizes. They're made to fit typical double garages. Custom sizes are available from speciality companies.

Differing dimensions

When referring to garage size, cite actual dimensions in metres. The size of the home, the length or number of vehicles and the amount of storage space needed define what's standard in each case.
