While night sweats are commonly associated with women and menopause, men of middle age can have them as well. Inconvenient and messy, the condition can be a sign of a more serious problem.

Prevalence

A 2002 Oklahoma Physicians Resource Network study published in The Journal of Family Practice indicated that as many as 41 per cent of patients suffered from night sweats in the previous month, with the prevalence highest in men and women ages 41 to 55.

Conditions

Men and women can suffer from idiopathic hyperhidrosis, a medical condition in which a person consistently and excessively sweats for an unknown reason, reports WebMD.

Medications

Antidepressants, nitroglycerine, tamoxifen, niacin and Viagra can cause excessive night sweating. Prednisone and prednisolone have also been associated with night sweats, WebMD reports.

Factors

Hypoglycaemia, neurological conditions and hormone disorders can also cause night sweats. Tuberculosis, bacterial infections and abscesses can also lead to excessive sweating in people of any age, according to WebMD.

Warnings

Some cancers that affect men can cause night sweats, particularly in the early stages. Most commonly seen as an early sign of lymphoma, patients with other types of cancer have reported night sweats--along with other health changes, such as weight loss--WebMD says.
