Corian shower floors look very rich and elegant and can be made without any seams, which is perfect for the shower floor. Solid-surface materials like Corian are non-porous and will not support the growth of bacteria, which is another ideal aspect for the shower floor. But you want to make sure your Corian shower floor is not slippery. If your Corian floor does not have a non-slip surface, there are ways you can make this surface safer and slip-resistant.

Clean the shower floor using a sponge or soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner, like ammonia, and warm water to remove any dirt and shower scum. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Dry the Corian surface thoroughly by letting it air dry for several hours or blowing a fan towards it for at least 30 minutes or until no water is visible.

Apply non-stick strips made for the shower (found at home centres, hardware or bath shops) every few inches throughout the shower floor or, alternatively, place a suction-cup-backed mat on the shower floor.

Sand the Corian surface, as a variation to using the non-stick strips or mat, by taking 80 grit sandpaper and sanding in circular motions until you have a slightly rough surface. Use this variation only if you have a light-coloured Corian material since the darker colours will produce a hazy white colour once they are sanded and may give an undesirable appearance.

TIP

Most local building codes require the builder or remodeler to install a shower floor with a bumpy or non-slip surface, especially those with a Corian solid surface shower floor or other slippery surface. If you are doing your own remodelling and installation, check with your local building supervisor before you start your project to make sure you don't violate any codes and have to pay a fine or tear out your shower. Professional Corian fabricators should be familiar with the best technique for attaining a suitable shower floor and will polish it to a matt finish, which is not as slippery as a polished finish. Many fabricators deal exclusively in baths and showers and may also have access to manufacturers that make premade solid-surface shower floors with the proper non-slip finish.
