Knowledge of how to properly use a glue gun can be found in the manufacturer's instructions and should be reviewed before you begin. Inspection of a glue gun before you start is important so that any problems, such as damage to the gun or the cord, can be caught.

Personal Protection

If the glue comes in contact with skin it can cause a burn, and the tip of the gun can also become extremely hot. Wear safety glasses and gloves that are constructed from leather or that are resistant to hot temperatures to protect against burns.

Glue Gun Placement

During use, keep the gun in a position where it will have no contact with objects that easily catch fire. It is best placed on its support stand with the nozzle facing down. Keep a material such as cardboard below it to help to catch the glue that drips down from the tip. The gun should never be placed on its side as the hot tip or glue can cause a fire.

When you are finished using a glue gun, unplug it and allow it to cool. This will prevent a fire from occurring. Leaving it plugged in and unattended can be extremely dangerous.

Focusing on the Task

Focus on the project you are working on and avoid distractions to prevent accidental burns. It is also critical to keep in mind the environment you are working in and the people who are near you. By being aware, working cautiously and using safety procedures accidents with a glue gun can be prevented.
