Elevated TSH levels, more commonly known as hyperthyroidism, is a condition known to occur far more often in women than men (roughly 10 times more likely). As such, there are a number of effective and long-lasting treatments that are available.

Radioactive Iodine

This is an oral remedy that will cause the reduction of the size of the thyroid gland itself. When this occurs, the symptoms of hyperthyroidism are often alleviated. Occasionally, supportive medications are required because of the hormonal reduction.

Anti-thyroid Medications

The drug Tapazole is the most common prescription drug treatment. It is another means of preventing the thyroid itself from over-producing hormones. Although this treatment can bring about desired results, it has been known to cause significant liver damage as well.

Beta Blockers

While beta blockers will not cause a change in production of thyroid hormones, they will aid in the prevalence of heart palpitations, which often occur with hyperthyroidism.

Surgical Intervention

The performance of a thyroidectomy is usually the last resort for treatment, and really only turned to if one is unable to tolerate the use of prescription or herbal remedies.

Holistic Treatment Approaches

Ayurvedic or Eastern medicine approaches have been known to be effective treatment modalities. Many practitioners place great faith in the use of sea greens and Peruvian Maca. Colloidal silver treatment is another holistic remedy that has been effective on occasion as well.
