Over the Counter Remedy for Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome is a nervous system disorder characterized by leg discomfort and an urge to move the legs when they are at rest. Restless Leg Syndrome typically occurs after the patient has gone to sleep and is also classified as a sleep disorder.

    Non-Prescription Pain Relievers

  1. For mild symptoms, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium can be taken to relieve tingling and discomfort.
  2. Supplements

  3. Deficiencies in iron, folate and magnesium can aggravate restless leg syndrome symptoms. Treating an underlying deficiency with over the counter supplements may provide relief.
  4. Relaxation Techniques

  5. Stress can trigger restless leg syndrome symptoms. Relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga done before bed helps the patient learn to relax prior to going to sleep.
  6. Exercise

  7. Having a moderate regular exercise program helps to decrease mild symptoms. Patients are cautioned against excessive exercise to avoid intensified symptoms.
  8. Avoid Stimulants

  9. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, decreased use of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco may provide some relief.
  10. Massages

  11. Massaging the legs before bed stimulates circulation and relaxes muscles.
