Travel back to the 1980s with a simple, affordable costume idea. Bright colours, gaudy accessories and excessive jewellery can quickly take anyone back to the time when more was best in fashion.

In the '80s, women's fashion was trademarked with bright colours and polka dots. While simple ripped denim jeans are acceptable, try a uniquely '80s look with a pair of neon leg warmers. Boys can wear acid-washed jeans or parachute trousers.

Girls can wear oversized sweatshirts over tight leggings for a funky '80s look. Boys should wear grungy T-shirts with Coca Cola, skateboards, break dancing, graffiti or other popular period images.

Simple jelly shoes were very common in the '80s for girls, but boys predominantly wore high-top tennis shoes. Women also wore 'wedgies,' large platform shoes with heels that were several inches high.

Jelly bracelets were worn in thick layers around the wrists while large, gaudy necklaces with large pendants and medallions were also piled on thickly. Long earrings were also common.

Pursues alternated between extremely large and extremely small during the '80s. Bright-coloured make-up was applied heavily, so girls should liberally apply blush, blue eyeliner and other colours.
