How to Stop a Mental Breakdown

A mental breakdown, also referred to as a nervous breakdown, is a term used when you are emotionally and physically overwhelmed and unable to complete your normal day-to-day activities. Underlying issues that can trigger a mental breakdown include high stress, depression and anxiety. A mental breakdown can happen for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, the end of a relationship, high stress at work, or financial difficulties. To put a stop to your mental breakdown, there are various actions you can take so you can get your life back on track.

Consult a psychologist or psychiatrist to determine the cause of your mental breakdown. Attend group and/or individual therapy sessions. Talk about what is happening in your life, and allow the doctor to help you find a coping strategy.

Get prescription drugs, such as antidepressants or psychotropic medications, from your doctor to help control underlying issues. Combine this with talk therapy to get a handle on your life.

Practice yoga or meditate daily to relax and keep stress levels low. Meditation can improve your mental strength and reduce anxiety.

Take homeopathic and herbal remedies such as St. John's wort, lavender and Valerian. These natural substances can improve your mental, emotional and physical health. When used in combination with talk therapy, it can effectively halt a mental breakdown.
