Types of Breast Implants

Choosing to have breast implants is often an emotional and deeply personal decision for a woman. If you are considering breast implants, it is important to be familiar with the types of implants that are on the market to ensure you select the product that is right for you.

    Types of Breast Implants

  1. There are two types of breast implants that are used in the majority of breast implant surgeries: the silicon and the saline implant. Both types have undergone rigorous testing and are approved for use by the FDA.
  2. Silicone Implants

  3. The silicone implant consists of a silicone shell or skin that encases a silicone gel substance that many women feel is most like actual breast tissue. Silicon implants are available in a wide range of pre-manufactured sizes and profiles.
  4. Saline Implants

  5. Saline implants also have a silicone shell, but they are filled with the same saline solution that is used in IVs. In some types of saline implants, the breast size can be adjusted post-surgically.
  6. Considerations

  7. Both silicon and saline implants have a lifespan of approximately 10 to 15 years. Removal and replacement is a surgical procedure, but usually require less recuperation that the initial surgery.
  8. Get Smart

  9. Be an informed medical consumer. Select a doctor who is a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience with breast implants. Ask to see examples of her work and make sure you discuss any risk factors and concerns before you commit to any surgical procedure.
