- Over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide are the most common type of acne treatment used today.
- Most acne medicine causes the skin to dry out and peel, thus preventing pores from becoming clogged with oil, which is when bacteria reproduces and acne appears.
- Birth control pills containing ethinylestradiol are sometimes prescribed to help clear the skin and prevent or diminish the appearance of acne.
- Aside from creams, there are also antibiotic lotions (such as erythromycin) and Retinoids that can be used to treat acne.
- For severe cases of acne that also show signs of infection, a dermatologist can prescribe Isotretinoin (an oral retinoid), antibiotics or an interlesional corticosteroid injection, in order to speed up healing and prevent scarring.
