The Average Salary of an Auto Designer

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS, groups auto designers in with commercial and industrial designers. They are responsible for designing the quality, function, style and safety features that are incorporated into various vehicles. They work with computer-aided industrial design, or CAD, programs when constructing a new design. The pay for this field varies by position and geographic area.

Earnings at the National Level

As of 2010, these professionals earned a mean annual salary of £40,228, or £19.30 per hour. Those earning in the 90th percentile received at or above £61,275 a year, or £29.40 per hour. Those in the 50th percentile earned at or below £37,849 a year, or £18.10 per hour. Those in the 10th percentile received £21,573, which breaks down to an hourly rate of £10.30.

Earnings by Industry

As of 2010, motor vehicle manufacturing offered the highest mean annual compensation at £57,382, or £27.50 per hour. Those employed by motor vehicle parts and supplies wholesalers received the fourth-highest mean annual salary at £45,376, or an hourly rate of £21.80. Auto designers employed in motor vehicle parts manufacturing received a mean annual salary of £40,761, or an hourly rate of £19.60.

Earnings by State

The BLS states that Kansas offered the highest mean annual rate of £55,243, or £26.50 per hour, as of 2010. Oregon offered the second-highest mean annual salary of £50,895, or £24.40 per hour, while Mississippi offered the third highest at £49,582 a year, or £23.80 per hour. Michigan paid the fourth-highest mean yearly salary of £46,800, which works out an hourly rate of £22.50. Massachusetts offered the fifth-highest mean annual salary of £45,448 and £21.80 per hour.

Earnings by Metropolitan Area

As of 2010, the area encompassing Greensboro and High Point, North Carolina, paid the highest mean annual salary of £60,209, or £28.90 per hour. Portland, Oregon, along with Vancouver and Beaverton, Washington, offered the second-highest mean yearly compensation of £57,083, or £27.40 per hour. Boston, Cambridge and Quincy, Massachusetts, paid the third-highest mean annual rate at £53,170 a year, or £25.50 per hour. Ann Arbor, Michigan, paid the fourth-highest mean annual salary at £52,578, or £25.20 per hour.
