Solution Developer Job Description

As technology becomes increasingly used in companies and in day-to-day life, clients often have software needs that are very unique. In order to solve these problems, solution developers are often called in. These developers are somewhat like sales representatives and customer service representatives, since they attempt to solve customer problems and also try to sell services provided by their company to the customer.


Solution developers create the computer products needed in order to accomplish particular goals that clients have. This can range from custom-made software to graphic designs. These developers must determine what their customers need by communicating closely with these customers. They must then find computer developers with the skill sets needed in order to develop the needed products and must determine the costs associated with the project and then give the customer a quote. With the customer’s approval, they commence with the software development and give the client continual updates so that the client can give feedback as to the progress made by the developers.


Solution developers spend some time meeting with clients and communicating to them. They also spend a lot of time on a computer developing software for clients. The large amount of time spent on a computer can lead to physical ailments such as eye strain and carpal tunnel syndrome. Their workplace is often an office, though solution developers can oftentimes work from home thanks to the Internet and telecommuting. They generally work 40 hours a week, though some solution developers work over 50 hours a week, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.


The education needed by a solution developer varies depending on the company. Some developers need only an associate degree in a computer-related field, while others need as much as a master’s degree in computer science with a specialisation relevant to the company they intend to work for. These developers must have enough technical knowledge in order to understand customer requests and be able to communicate these requests concisely to the software development team. Critical thinking skills and mathematical skills are also highly important.


Between 2008 and 2018, the need for computer software programmers and engineers is expected to grow by 21 per cent between 2008 and 2018. Solutions developers are needed as companies become increasingly specialised and need specific types of technology in order to carry out business operations.


The median annual earnings for computer software engineers in 2008 were £55,529, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest 10 per cent earned more than £83,765, while the lowest 10 per cent earned less than £34,918.
