Job description for a doorman

Whether walking through the lobby doors of a luxury apartment building or modest hotel, doormen are often the first people you see upon arrival. For residents, they represent a part of the community and help create a friendly and welcoming living environment. In commercial buildings and hotels, doormen help manage a variety of duties that ensure lobbies are fully staffed and maintained for incoming guests.

Function

Doormen are responsible for meeting, greeting and directing residents and guests to their destinations. They work in large apartment buildings, complexes, hotels and commercial offices. In addition to verifying and recording visitor information, doormen also receive and process incoming mail and outgoing shipments, monitor lobby traffic and alert residents to arriving guests and deliveries.

Education

Employers require that applicants have at least a high school diploma or educational equivalent. Some companies prefer candidates who have completed college coursework. Courses in hospitality are helpful, along with basic classes in math, writing, reading comprehension and computer technology.

Skills

Doormen must have strong interpersonal skills, as this job requires frequent interaction and communication with building residents and guests. They should be highly organised, courteous, friendly, professional and amiable. Doormen must also be good listeners and able to accurately transmit information. Doormen should also be multitaskers, work with computers and perform well under pressure.

Salary

The average hourly wage for a doorman in the United States was £5.50 to £10.10, according to a June 2010 PayScale report. Average total pay for doorman jobs, including tips, overtime and bonuses, was between £14,309 and £26,358 annually.

Potential

Receptionist and information clerk positions are expected to grow by 15 per cent between 2008 and 2018, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This includes professionals responsible for greeting visitors, answering phones at the front desk and distributing incoming and outgoing mail. Companies will look to fill open positions due to attrition. Professionals with a wide range of skills, including administrative and technical abilities, will have favourable job opportunities.
