Assistant food and beverage managers work in a wide range of hospitality and food service environments. Restaurants, bars that serve food and hotels with restaurants and room service typically have an assistant food and beverage manager. This job may also be found on cruise ships and at resorts that have full-service restaurants and bars.

Job Duties

In addition to staff supervision and customer service, an assistant food and beverage manager oversees the department budget and provides upper management with related reports on profits, losses and variances. He also screens and hires servers, monitors their performance and provides guidance to improve customer relations. His job normally entails working with the kitchen and bar staffs on developing new menu selections and keeping the atmosphere upbeat and appealing to a diverse clientele. He also controls the inventory in the restaurant and bar.

Working Conditions

The environment for this position ranges from business casual to formal, depending upon the venue. The job requires good physical stamina, as it involves a great deal of walking throughout the site. Since the atmosphere is social and interactive, good communication skills are required. Although the job is normally presented as a 40-hour-a week position, situations often arise that require unexpected overtime. These overtime conditions frequently involve covering for absent personnel or the resolution of customer service issues.

Educational Requirements

Although no formal education is required for this job, education or training in hospitality industry operations or management is desirable. Coursework in accounting, auditing or customer service is considered a plus by many employers. A high school diploma or equivalent is normally required.
