Ranked second on website's "Top 50 Most Popular Tattoo Designs" list, star tattoos are worn by tattooed men and women seeking a design that promotes protection or attainment of goals. A tattoo artist adds design elements such as tribal, filigree or banners to customise a star tattoo for a client. For example, a shooting star with music notes represents a musician's career goals and love of the craft. A sailor may wear a nautical star with a banner, noting the name of his vessel for protection while on the sea.

Nautical Star

Nautical stars are a symbol of protection for the wearer. A symbol tattooed on sailors, nautical stars have five points and a line down the middle of each point. Two colours are tattooed in nautical stars in each half of each point, rotating colours from point to point of the star. Besides protection, a nautical star represents direction or a positive attitude. Wear a nautical star tattoo not only for journeys that involve travelling, but for a life journey as well, such as school, marriage or a career path. A tattoo of two nautical stars in different colours can represent parents of the wearer to provide guidance and protection when away from home. Another option is a memorial tattoo of several nautical stars to remind the wearer of guidance provided by deceased parents or grandparents.

A pentagram consists of a star surrounded by a circle. "In the case of the Pentagram, the star's symbolism is dramatically altered by its orientation" explains Wiccans believe that a pentagram---facing upward---represents spirit, water, air, earth and fire. A tattoo of a pentagram for a Wiccan symbolises pride in religion and a reminder of faith. Inverted, or upside down, pentagrams are satanic or evil images. Heavy or death metal bands, such as Slayer, frequently use pentagrams in album artwork. Fans of bands and the macabre wear pentagram tattoos.

Five-Point Star

A five-point star outline can have names or sayings added on the inside. The star must be relatively large to fit text inside the outline to prevent the text from blurring as the skin ages. Names or inspirational words, such as "hope" or "dream," are examples of text to tattoo inside a five-point star. Another option is to add a banner in front of the star with text. Coordinate the name of a family member or child with a colour for the star. For example, if the star tattoo is representative of a mother who has passed away, use the mom's favourite colour for the star and add her name with a banner.
