College admissions is the process of acquiring new students to a postsecondary education program. Sometimes called directors of admission, college admissions managers oversee all of the functions relating to admissions at a college or university.


College admissions managers have a responsibility to recruit students to attend a college or university and to develop objective methods of deciding what students to accept for admission and what students to turn away.

Types of Duties

College admissions managers plan recruiting events at college fairs, review and update student selection guidelines and study statistics about current students at a college or university and their backgrounds in order to predict what types of applicants become the most successful students. The college admissions manager also hires, trains, disciplines and evaluates the staff of an admissions department.


To complete her duties, a college admissions manager works closely with her school's marketing department to develop materials to attract students. In addition, the financial aid manager also cooperates with the admissions manager to develop scholarships and other programs that attract students and help those admitted afford the costs of higher education.


Successful college admissions managers possess organizational and communication skills and leadership ability. Managers also need to use computers to access studies and current student information, as well as software programs and applications such as word processing and e-mail.


Most college admissions managers have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in business or marketing, and some employers prefer applicants with master's degrees. In addition, previous management experience is typically required and work experience in college admission is preferred.
