Food That Lowers Acidity

Acid production is a normal and necessary part of the digestive process, but the presence of excess stomach acid can lead to a host of health problems from heartburn to ulcers. While over-the-counter antacids can provide quick relief for these problems, a healthy, balanced diet is the best long-term solution to reduce stomach acidity. Holistic doctors frequently advise eating alkaline foods; a mix of mostly fruits and vegetables which neutralise acid in the stomach and prevent acidity from increasing.


A number of fresh fruits are alkaline foods that help lower acidity in the stomach. Among the fruits with the highest alkaline content are dried varieties, such as dried figs, dried apricots, raisins and dates. Other slightly less alkaline fruits that are still good acid neutralisers include cantaloupe, apples, pears, berries, kiwi and papaya. Consuming these fruits regularly should go a long way toward neutralising the acidity in your stomach, preventing heartburn and other related conditions.

Green Vegetables

Much like the aforementioned fruits, various green vegetables also have a high alkaline content, which is effective in reducing acidity in the body. According to the Mayo Clinic Diet Manual, the most alkaline veggies include Swiss chard, dandelion greens and beet greens. Other excellent high-alkaline picks are watery, pale green vegetables, such as celery, cabbage and broccoli, which are more effective acid neutralisers in their raw form. (For an excellent alkaline snack, fill fresh celery stalks with a bit of peanut butter and top with raisins.) Eating these veggies will help digestive enzyme functioning while neutralising stomach acid.

Potassium-Rich Foods

Potassium is one of the most highly recommended types of alkaline foods to neutralise stomach acid and aid in digestive functioning. In fact, potassium bicarbonate's neutralising properties have made it a common ingredient in many antacids as well as in baking soda. Excellent high-potassium foods to lower stomach acidity include bananas and baked potatoes without toppings. Or, make a baking soda solution using ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and ½ cup of water and drink regularly to help neutralise stomach acid.
