Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally in your body and may be the key. Some foods contain hyaluronic acid and can help stimulate its production in your body for smooth, younger skin, better eyesight and a more limber, healthy body.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance naturally found in your skin, eyes, joints and heart valves, lubricating and protecting them. Bill Sardi, author of the book "Live 100 Years Without Growing Old," explains that HA "is a water-gelling molecule that is abundant in young children and females who still produce oestrogen." As you get older, the amount of HA declines in your body. Your skin begins to wrinkle, and your eyesight and joints begin to show signs of ageing.

Soybeans contain high amounts of phytoestrogens--plant sources of oestrogen that act like oestrogen in your body. Oestrogen helps your body produce more hyaluronic acid. Consume soybean foods such as tofu, tempeh, soy cheese and soy milk. Scientists at the Yakult Central Institute for Microbiological Research in Japan revealed soy milk extracts fermented with bifidobacterium (a "friendly bacteria") significantly enhanced the production of HA when applied topically on the skin for two weeks. This did not work with unfermented soy milk extracts.

Red Wine

In 1997, researchers at Northwestern University Medical School learnt that resveratrol in red wine, highly concentrated in grape skin, is a phytoestrogen. Drink red wine or red grape juice to increase oestrogen, which produces more hyaluronic acid in your body.

Starchy Root Vegetables

In November 2000, a ABC News Prime Time Live program revealed something interesting about the people of Yuzurihara, Japan, called the "village of long life." They all have smooth, wrinkle-free skin, good eyesight, health and energy and live well into their 80s and 90s. The people of Yuzurihara grow and eat starchy root vegetables, which stimulate the body to produce hyaluronic acid, including a small sweet-potato-like vegetable called "tamaji."

Arctium Lappa Fruit

Studies at Research & Development, Beiersdorf AG in Hamburg, Germany, revealed success using Arctium lappa (A. lappa) fruit extract to reduce signs of ageing. A. lappa, which contains hyaluronic acid, was part of a formula and applied topically. After 4 weeks, the crow's feet wrinkles were "significantly reduced." Scientists concluded A. lappa effectively regenerates the skin structures to reduce wrinkles.

Tips and Warnings

Quit or reduce smoking if you want wrinkle-free skin. Smoking cigarettes depletes hyaluronic acid in the body.

Consult with your doctor before increasing phytoestrogens in your diet.
