It is important to maintain a healthy diet if you have been diagnosed with liver disease. Everything that you eat must pass through the liver for processing, so making healthy choices is crucial if you want to keep your liver functioning properly. Eating a well balanced diet is important for everyone, and is especially important for those with liver disease. By eating a balanced diet, you are making sure that you get the vitamins and nutrients that your body so desperately needs.

High-Fiber Foods

High-fibre foods are very important to the overall function of your liver. A diet rich in fibre will help to quickly pass toxins out of the bowels, which gives them less of a chance to recirculate back to the liver. Fibre-rich foods include apples, avocados, bananas, blueberries, cantaloupe, oranges, peaches, raisins, strawberries, bran cereal, bread, pasta, rice, beans and nuts.

Sulphur-Rich Foods

Vitamins are important for the whole body, including the liver. Vitamins B, C and E all help maintain a healthy liver. Vitamin C and E both act as antioxidants. They lower the damage from free radicals, cleaning and healing the liver. Vitamin B acts as a decongestant and keeps the liver functioning properly. Foods that are high in Vitamin B, C and E are broccoli, carrots, peas, oatmeal, lemons, tomato juice, peppers, kiwi, oranges, turkey and tuna.

Foods to Avoid

Foods that are deep fried and high in fat are never a good choice, especially when you have liver disease. Fatty foods increase your risk for gallstones, which is a liver-related disease. Foods high in salt should also be avoided, as well as smoked and cured foods. Most desserts, snacks and sugary drinks will not help your liver at all. There is a definite link between obesity and gallbladder disorders, so by eating right and maintaining a healthy weight you reduce your risk of those disorders.
