Products made from recycled plastic are an excellent way to prevent the material from ending up in a landfill. Once plastic has been successfully recycled, it can become another version of basically any plastic product. There is a wide variety of items that can be made from recycled plastic. Reusing plastic bottles is a common craft activity, but supporting companies that produce recycled plastic products captures the scope of the concept in a more concrete manner.

Shopping Bags

Plastic is an extremely versatile material and is therefore a top choice in many industries. It is produced with an extensive amount of petroleum and is therefore a wasteful and nonrenewable process. Recycled plastic products ease the pressure on the oil industry to produce these plastic items. Recycled plastic shopping bags are available at many grocery and department store chains, and they offer convenient, cost-effective and stylish options instead of new plastic bags. They are durable and come in many sizes.

According to "Natural Living for Women," textiles are an area where recycled plastic is used extensively. Plastic bottles, once broken down in the recycling process, can be spun into fabric and made into clothing, bags and a variety of accessories. Carpeting is another option in recycled plastics for the home. The plastic is given new life through these everyday products while allowing for stylish and useful options.

Patio Furniture

Recycled plastic is useful for patio furniture; it is durable and long lasting. Plastic requires little maintenance and cleans easily. Originally, Adirondack chairs, which are a popular choice for backyard seating, were constructed of wood. Manufacturers using recycled plastic allow for stylish options, while also being environmentally conscious through their furniture options.

DIY Tote Bag

Useful items for the home are available in recycled plastics, but a useful item can also be crafted at home. Plastic bags are abundant from grocery stores and beyond. The average household has at least some of these around for use. The bags should be cut into strips about 2 inches wide and as long as possible. A stiff piece of fabric will provide the top of the bag. Stitch the strips of plastic bag to the stiff strip at the top. They will hang down and should be trimmed to the length of the shortest piece. Stitch the ends to another piece of stiff fabric. Repeat this entire process once more. Then stitch the bottom strips together. Weave more plastic bag strips through the vertical strips so they produce a cross pattern. Stitch the edges together to produce a bag. Take a few strips of plastic bag and twist them together to form a handle and then stitch it to the edges of the bag.
