Betnovate ointment is a medication that is used to treat certain skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis. The active ingredient in Betnovate ointment is betamethasone valerate, which is a steroid. This topical ointment is used to help to reduce swelling, irritation, redness and itchiness associated with dermatitis and other skin ailments. Betnovate is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline in the United Kingdom.

Considerations

Patients who are allergic to betamethasone valerate should not use Betnovate ointment. This product is not intended for use on any child under the age of one year. Women who are pregnant, breast-feeding, or may become pregnant should discuss use of Betnovate ointment before using it. Betnovate ointment is not intended for the treatment of acne, rosacea, viral or fungal infections, or itching around the genitals.

Prevention/Solution

Betnovate ointment should always be applied according to the physician's instructions. Because it is a topical ointment, Betnovate should never be ingested. People who are applying the ointment onto a patient should wear protective gloves or wash their hands thoroughly after the application. The condition treated with Betnovate ointment should begin to show signs of improvement within two to four weeks. If no improvement is noted the patient should consult with his physician.

Function

Betnovate ointment works inside the cells of the skin by decreasing the release of certain inflammatory substances. The result is a corresponding reduction in swelling, itching, and redness. Betamethasone, the active ingredient in Betnovate ointment is suspended in a moisturising base. This helps prevent the loss of water from the surface of the skin, which in turn helps to control the dryness and itching associated with certain skin conditions including eczema and dermatitis.

Warning

Betnovate ointment carries some risk of side effects. Swelling or worsening of the original skin condition may indicate an allergic reaction to betamethasone valerate. Psoriasis patients may rarely experience pustular psoriasis, pus filled bumps under the skin. In either of these cases, the patient should stop using Betnovate and immediately contact their physician. On rare occasions patients have reported skin discolouration, thin skin, increased hair growth, stretch marks, and weight gain. Any side effect, including those not listed, should be reported to the attending physician.

Effects

Betnovate ointment may stain clothing and fabric. Care should be taken to prevent accidental application to fabrics by covering clothing with a clean cotton cloth before applying the ointment. If the ointment gets on an item of clothing it should be washed immediately according to the manufacturer's instructions.
