Features of the Honda GX25 Engine

The GX25 is the featured engine of the FG110AT Mini Honda garden tiller. The GX25 is a 4-stroke, single-cylinder small engine that uses regular (86 octane or higher) unleaded gasoline and 10W30 engine oil. Maintenance requirements are similar to those of a lawnmower engine. The displacement of this engine is 25cc's (cubic centimetres, or 1.5 cubic inches). It features a centrifugul clutch that begins to engage the tiller at about 4,200rpm (rotations per minute) and disengages when the engine rests at idle speed. The engine oil level must be checked before each use, and it must be replaced after the first ten hours of use (the break-in period) and then every 6 months, or replaced after 50 hours of use, after the break-in period.

Features of the Honda GXV57 Engine

The GXV57 engine is featured on the smaller of the Honda mid-tine tillers. It is also a 4-stroke, single-cylinder small engine that uses regular unleaded gasoline and 10W30 engine oil. The displacement of this engine is over twice that of the GX25 at 57.3cc's (3.5 cubic inches). Engine maintenance guidelines are the same as the GX25. This engine also has a centrifugal clutch; however, the GXV57 clutch engages at 2,900 rpms.

Features of the Honda GX160 Engine

The GX160 engine is the featured engine of the full-sized Honda mid-tine tiller. This engine is used with an on/off switch that must be in the "on" position before it will start. The throttle on this engine is also adjustable. As far as maintenance is concerned, the oil must be checked before each use and must be changed for the first time after the break-in period, which is the first 20 hours of use. The oil must be changed regularly after the break-in period every 6 months, or after 100 hours of use. Using 10W40 engine oil during changes offers the best operating temperature range for this engine. The displacement of this engine is 163cc's (9.9 cubic inches), which is quite large for a 4-stroke, single-cylinder engine.

Features of the Honda GX240 Engine

The GX240 engine boasts enough power to be featured on the Honda rear-tine tiller. The rear-tine tiller is the largest featured tiller on the Honda website. This engine has many of the same features as the GX160, and the maintenance schedule is similar as well. The main difference between the GX240 and the GX160 is size: the displacement of the GX240 is 242cc's (14.8 cubic inches), and the output is 8 horsepower. An engine like this will allow you to till a lot of stubborn ground in a short period of time.

The Best Tiller for the Job

The GX25 runs the Honda mini tiller, which is the perfect machine for tilling small garden and flower beds. Use this tiller for small jobs that have been tilled with a larger tiller before in amended clay soil or loamy soil. Mid-tine tillers are good for working larger areas and are designed to be well balanced and easy to use.

The GXV57 runs the smaller Honda mid-tine tiller, which is great for tilling medium-sized areas. An ideal soil type for this tiller is hard topsoil.The GX160 acts as the power plant for the larger of the two Honda mid-tine tillers: the FC600AN. This tiller can handle clay soils that have been tilled within the past year, and any topsoil or loamy soils.

The large Honda rear-tine tiller sports the GX240 engine. This tiller is your first line of defence against hard and compacted clay soils, and other soils that have not been tilled for a while. With a tiller like this, you can work all day without experiencing tiller fatigue.
